SV-10 Vibro Viscometer

Zetasizer Nano series for Particle Size, Zeta Potential, and Molecular Weight Measurement

The SV-10 viscometer is the latest addition to Malvern’s range of material characterization systems.
The Vibro viscometer is a fast, simple to use system using patented technology that ensures high result accuracy.

Measurement involves lowering the sensors into the sample, pressing the start button on the control unit, then waiting just 15 seconds for the result to be displayed. Cleaning is simply a matter of rinsing and wiping the gold plated sensor plates.

Viscosity range: 0.3 to 10,000mPa.s (Centipoise)
Accuracy and repeatability: 1% over the whole measurement range

The main application is in conjunction with the Zetasizer Nano is to improve the accuracy of size and zeta potential measurement.

When measuring size using dynamic light scattering, or zeta potential using microelectrophoresis, the accuracy of the result depends on the accuracy of the dispersant viscosity used.

Any additive in the dispersant will affect the viscosity. For example, a buffer such as ‘Tris’ (Tris Hydroxymethylaminoethane) at isotonic concentration will increase the viscosity by 5%, and an additive such as 3.5% Ethylene Glycol will increase the viscosity by 10%.

Since the size calculated by the technique is directly related to the accuracy of the viscosity the user inputs, the error in the size reported will be 5% and 10% in these cases, if the viscosity change due to these additives is not taken into account.

Zetasizer Nano series for Particle Size, Zeta Potential, and Molecular Weight Measurement
A range of accessories are provided as part of the system, and can also be ordered separately. The polycarbonate sample cups can be reused, but are low enough cost to be considered disposable.

Thermostatted water jacket
This connects to a recirculating bath to control the temperature of the sample. This ensures that the viscosity can be measured at the same temperature required for size or zeta potential measurement of the sample

10mL polycarbonate sample cup
The lowest volume sample cup, for use with aqueous samples.

13mL glass sample cup
Compatible with all sample types.

35mL polycarbonate sample cup
This cell can be used with a protection device for the sensors, to avoid accidental damage, however they are not compatible with the thermostatted water jacket.

Software
The software enables a continuous display of the viscosity and the temperature from the measurement unit to be displayed on a PC. This requires a free RS232C 9 pin socket on the PC.

If a temperature ramp is applied to the sample, this enables a complete profile of viscosity as a function of temperature and time to be displayed.
