NIR Digital Image Analyzer for Chemical Imaging

Synergy: The interaction of two or more agents or forces so that their combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual effects. (From Greek sunergia, cooperation, from sunergos, working together)

SyNIRgi: Near infrared spectroscopy and digital imaging combined to create something far more powerful than either alone

The SyNIRgi, a new Near Infrared chemical imaging (NIRCI) digital image analyzer product, builds on the highly successful Spectral Dimensions Sapphire/NIRCI-2450 platform. Rugged instrumentation with no moving parts, modular software that enables the development of turnkey solutions, and expandability for automation are the hallmarks of the SyNIRgi.

The standard version will generate 81,920 NIR spectra from a 13 x 10 mm sample area in minutes. Two wavelength ranges are available, the SyNIRgi will collect data over the spectral range 1200-2450 nm, and the SyNIRgi-S (S=short wavelength) from 950-1720 nm. Also, an option will be available to collect NIR chemical images with unprecedented image fidelity, with greater than 300,000 NIR spectra in a single measurement.

The standard SyNIRgi operating from 1200-2450 nm provides the best possible chemical specificity in the NIR range. It is ideal for assessing the micro characteristics of samples consisting of spatially complex arrangements of chemical species. Examples include pharmaceutical solid dosage forms, such as tablets, granules, powder blends, drug delivery patches, etc.

The shorter spectral range allows NIR imaging with a greater depth of penetration, and is particularly well suited for imaging large fields of view. Typical applications include impurity detection and identification, forensics, animal feed studies, analysis of seed components and the migration of additives in polymer production.

Standard image analysis tools transform qualitative information contained within an image into quantitative metrics that deliver objective answers. The true value of NIR-CI is exploited only with access to the statistical and image analysis capabilities available in ISys, Malvern’s highly successful data analysis software.

Practical and Flexible

  • Rapid data acquisition
81,920 complete NIR spectra are collected in 2 minutes
  • Random wavelength access
For applications that only require a few wavelengths, collection of just those wavelengths can be achieved in seconds, with no loss of analytical performance
  • Easily configurable field of view
Depending on the requirements of a particular application, small areas can be imaged at high magnification (micro mode) or large areas imaged at lower magnification (macro mode). Since it is easy to change between them, both modes can be used for the same sample
  • Adjustable illumination source
The rapid adjustment of power, orientation, and polarization accessories optimizes sample illumination regardless of shape, size or type of sample
  • Real-time infrared video display
Sample alignment and focusing is simple because its image on the detector is displayed in real time
  • Choice of optical configurations
Reflectance or transmittance measurement capability enables the analysis of a wide range of sample types

Rugged and reliable

  • Non-destructive analysis
The same samples can be analyzed at different magnifications or re-analyzed using complementary analytical tools
  • No liquid nitrogen
There is no need to keep filling a liquid nitrogen dewar. The detector is maintained at low temperatures with an integrated Stirling cooler
  • Highly flexible software
The ISys software provides the most powerful, versatile, and comprehensive suite of multivariate and statistical methods for the analysis of NIR chemical images. The result is reliable, simultaneous quantitative characterization of the chemical and physical properties of a variety of complex solid-state materials and products
  • Quantitative and statistically robust data
With 81,920 spectra contained in each data set, the resulting data provide statistically robust and quantitative data that can be invaluable in R&D as well as QA/QC settings
  • Automated operation
The programmable sample stage enables sequential analysis of multiple samples, just set it up and let it go. "Macro" functions in ISys data analysis software automatically analyze the sequence of captured images
  • Robust
Built on a solid state platform with no moving parts, and no need for external cooling, the SyNIRgi is readily configurable for laboratory QA/QC and process applications
  • Regulatory compliance
Technical capability to achieve 21CFR Part 11 compliance is an option once the required procedural and administrative controls are in place
